Davina McCall has opened up for the first time about the breakdown of her marriage to Matthew Robertson, admitting it was “traumatic”.
The Masked Singer judge, 52, split from her husband of 17 years in 2017 after their relationship broke down, and she was left reeling from her beloved dad’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
The following year, Davina was struck by more tragedy when her grandmother died, six years after the death of her half-sister and best frend Caroline Baday from cancer.
Her split from Matthew came at the worst possible time, leading to “emotional turmoil”, she confessed.
“Going through a divorce is a traumatic experience and it is something that needs to be navigated as carefully as possibl,” she tells the Mail On Sunday’s You magazine.
“Two years on, we have both grown as people and we can now co-parent happily and acknowledge that it was the right thing for us to go through even though it involved absolute emotional turmoil.”
Her years of pain have left Davina with a no-nonsense approach to grief.
“I don’t scream and cry – in fact, I find it very difficult to cry. I’ve had so much loss in my life, I try to deal with everything as practically and logically as I can,” she revealed.
But when it comes to parenting her and Matthew’s three teenagers – Holly, 18, Tilly, 16, and Chester, 13 – Davina said she’s open and honest as possible about her own past.
“I talk to them about mine and my experiences… all the drugs I have taken, what effect they had,” she admitted.
“I ask questions about the drugs that are around now because it’s a totally different landscape – I’m terrified by ketamine. My kids are very savvy and I trust them, and because I’ve talked so openly about my experiences none of them has experimented with drugs.”
Davina has since found happiness with celebrity hairdresser Michael Douglas, who she started dating in summer 2019 following his split from wife Tracey.
But, she insisted, she’s yet to officially confirm their romance because she still respects her ex.
“I will never sit here and go into great details and the reason for that is all down to respect. I have a huge amount of respect for Matthew, I have respect for my children and the same goes for Michael’s family,” she explained.
“It would not be right in any way for me to talk about my relationship – it would not be fair at all on any party. No one else involved is in the public eye so it would be even worse for me to drag them in.
“I am always conscious of being completely mindful. If I go to an event with Michael, we arrive separately to avoid any photos. This is just something that I try to keep as private as possible. It’s complicated.”
It comes as Davina celebrates her new role on ITV talent show The Masked Singer, which kicked off last night with the reveal of EastEnders star Patsy Palmer as the Butterflty.
The show sees 12 celebrities dressed in ornate animal costumes compete each week, and whoever is voted into last place must unveil their identity before they’re kicked off.
Tonight sees Davina join fellow judges Rita Ora, Ken Jeong and Jonathan Ross to watch as six new celebrities battle it out for a chance to go through to the next round.
