EastEnders fans may have missed some key links to the past over Christmas, amid the drama surrounding Keanu Taylor’s brutal murder.

Fans are convinced the character is still alive, after the Mitchells took their revenge over his affair with Sharon Mitchell.

Her husband Phil, his son Ben and even daughter Louise – Keanu’s fiancée and baby mama, all played a part in getting Martin Fowler to shoot him dead in graphic scenes.

But amid the chaos surrounding the death and other plots unfolding during the festive episodes on and around Christmas Day, fans might have missed links between the key scenes on the BBC soap.

There were several nods to the past filled with nostalgia for loyal fans, or those who haven’t watched in a while.

First of all, just like the months leading up to it, the Sheanu affair reveal was full of links back to the original storyline back in 1994, Sharongate.

This storyline saw Grant Mitchell learn of wife Sharon’s affair with his brother Phil Mitchell, with the whole of Walford also finding out.

In one of the biggest episodes of all time, an audio recording confirmed the truth to all those in The Queen Vic pub.

The past few months, as Sharon and Keanu’s affair has risked being exposed, there has been subtle nods to this iconic storyline – but Christmas Day saw the biggest nod of all.

Sharon walked into the same very pub, where she herself announced the truth this time around – shouting out news of her affair and baby secret aloud to those in the pub.

Talk about history repeating itself!

Phil also referenced Sharon’s adoptive parents Angie and Den Watts, in a scene that almost replicated the most-watched episode and scene on the BBC soap of all time.

Back in 1986 on Christmas Day, 30 million viewers tuned in to see Den hand over divorce papers to his shocked wife.

Fast-forward to 2019 Christmas Day, and it was Sharon’s turned to be left stunned as her own husband Phil exposed her affair, before telling her he’d already filed for divorce.

But there was another moment in the cursed pub that nodded to the past – again referencing Angie and Den.

Angie was an alcoholic, and battled with her addiction throughout her time in the famous pub.

Now, Sharon’s best mate Linda Carter, who runs and lives in the pub with husband Mick, is at the centre of a harrowing alcoholism plot.

She was rushed to hospital on Christmas Day after being left in danger following a booze up, and now her family faces being torn apart.

Finally, we had Martin Fowler left traumatised on Christmas Eve after leaving a mystery character for dead in a hit-and-run.

It came 17 years to the day Martin accidentally killed Jamie Mitchell when he run him over in his car.

Martin broke down as he remembered the death after potentially killing someone else years on, struggling to hide his guilt.

He even reconciled with former flame and first love Sonia Fowler this week, with them reminiscing on the past and referencing former characters including Pauline and Arthur Fowler.

Soap boss Kate Oates referenced these nods to the past at a recent EastEnders press event, commenting: “They left a guy laying in the road so there’s that still to play out.

“And the resonance of what Martin has there over what happened with Jamie and what happened then.”

She added: “She’s found that wine o’clock has come earlier and earlier and it’s suddenly become
overwhelming.

“It’s a bit of a homage to Den and Angie. There’s been a classic tradition of drinking and toxic relationships in that pub.”

EastEnders airs Mondays and Fridays at 8pm, and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One.
