EastEnders viewers couldn’t believe their eyes, when they spotted Dot Cotton’s huge bank account balance.

Sonia Fowler attempted to steal £5,000 from her savings account, with this twist not revealed until the flashback episode on New Year’s Day.

The character was seen logging into Dot’s online banking account, before deleting her search history on her laptop moments later.

But viewers were a little distracted from Sonia’s teary realisation of what she had done.

As she was seen looking at Dot’s account, the balance was displayed on the screen and it was huge.

Viewers were left stunned as they realised Dot was a millionaire, with over a million pounds in her account.

One fan commented: “Erm… ok so Sonia is nicking Dot’s money, can believe that…. but hold on that bank balance was over £1million?!!!!”

Another agreed: “It was Sonia who stole from Dot, and Dot has over one million in her account? How on earth? What pension plan was she on?!”

A third added: “Is no one gonna talk about the fact that dot has a million quid in the bank or are we all millionaires these days?!”

This was echoed by another viewer who tweeted: “AND…. the biggest shocker of all…. if Dot’s got over a million in her bank account, it was a bit stingy getting them a bible each.”

But early last year this huge amount of savings was explained, after the loss of her close friend Dr Legg.

He left Dot his entire real and personal estate in Golders Green in his will, leaving Dot and her loved ones stunned.

The windfall left the Walford legend a millionaire, and she wasn’t initially sure if she wanted the money.

Some viewers recalled this, with one fan tweeting: “Dr Legg gave it her in his will.”

EastEnders airs Mondays and Fridays at 8pm, and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One.
