Phil Vickery and Fern Britton left fans heartbroken today after announcing that they have split after 20 years together.

Fern, who has a daughter with This Morning chef Phil, announced the news that they would be going their “separate ways”.

She tweeted: “After more than 20 happy years together, Phil and I have decided to go our separate ways. We will always share a great friendship and our lovely children . We would appreciate it if our privacy is respected at this time. Thank you for your continued kindness and support.”

Fern admitted last year that they have been spending little time together, telling Good Housekeeping in August 2019: “We haven’t seen much of each other in the past year, as I have been on tour with Calendar Girls and he has been filming, but our solid base is absolutely there.”

Fern and Phil first met in 1999 on the set of Ready Steady Cook, a year after splitting from TV executive Clive Jones, who she has three children with.

The couple wed just a year later in 2000 when her divorce from Clive had been finalised. They welcomed daughter Winnie in August 2001.

In an interview with the Mirror in 2018, Fern opened up about how they let each other have their freedom.

She said: “He’s a man who has always got to meet a man about a dog.

“He says, ‘I will be half an hour’. That might be a couple of days. We don’t crowd each other and we are happy with that.”

That same year, she also spoke about how she would rather have a cup of tea rather than sex with her husband.

“Sex is great but a cup of tea is great, too,” she said. “There’s nothing nicer than getting into bed with a cuppa and having a hug and a chat – that’s love.

“Lust is great, but when you really love someone and you trust each other, and you’re in bed together drinking tea and chatting, that is a true relationship.”
