Gavin & Stacey star Matt Horne has defended the cliffhanger ending to the Christmas special after some fans were “angry’ about it.

He admitted there were viewers who were frustrated that the show left them wondering whether Smithy would accept Nessa’s proposal of marriage.

But, he argued, “it was a good way to leave it”.

He also discussed the possibility of a fourth series of the show, which returned for a one-off Christmas episode after a ten-year hiatus.

When asked if more episodes were in the works, Matt told the Daily Star: “I don’t know. I don’t write it.

“I’d love for there to be more Gavin and Stacey, I love playing that character and I love being with everyone.

“I would love to do it.”

James Corden and Ruth Jones, who write the show, spoke about their disappointment at the immediate demands from fans for more Gavin & Stacey.

Ruth told Radiotimes: “It’s a bit like opening loads of presents on Christmas Day and going ‘Oh yeah, yeah great, what’s next? Oh yeah, what’s the next one?’”

“And you go, ‘No! Let’s open this present and lets really enjoy it and appreciate that present.’”

The show won the Impact Award at the National Television Awards on Tuesday.

Ruth went up on stage with the rest of the cast and crew to collect the Impact Award during the star-studded ceremony.

She started her acceptance speech with an “alright” in character as Nessa, before asking Olly Murs: “Oh Olly, what’s o-murring?”

Turning to Tom Jones, she added: “I don’t know what you’re laughing at Tom. You never write, you never phone. There’s still a lot of electricity between me and Sir Tom and don’t you knows it.”

Excited Gavin & Stacey fans were eagerly anticipating some exciting news – and were convinced Ruth would confirm a fourth series of the hit sitcom.

But they were left bitterly disappointed when Ruth failed to mention if the show was returning.

One viewer said: “Here is me feeling like an absolutely p**t thinking Ruth Jones was going to drop the “Series 4” bomb at the end of that speech..”.
