The late RnB singer Aaliyah wanted ‘nothing to do’ with R. Kelly following the end of their controversial marriage in the 1990s – according to music boss Damon Dash.
The One In A Million singer (who died in 2001 aged 22) allegedly wed rap star R. Kelly, 52, in 1994 aged just 15-years-old – before the marriage was annulled the following year.
Music star Damon has now spoken out about the knowledge he has of the controversial relationship between Aaliyah and R. Kelly – speaking in a new documentary series.
The 48-year-old record executive is featured in the forthcoming documentary Surviving R. Kelly Part II: The Reckoning where he claims Aaliyah shunned the I Believe I Can Fly singer after their marriage was annulled.
“Aaliyah was like the sacrificial lamb. She didn’t deserve none of that,” Damon says in footage featured on TMZ.
“She had a good soul. She was a good girl. And wasn’t even resentful. She was like ‘let that man live, but just keep him the f*** away from me’. That’s what she wanted,” he said.
Damon says he can be believed because he was close to both singers.
“I know the whole story. I know it was a cover up. But having that covered up just made it less crazy – he married a child?” he said.
The music mogul makes clear his disgust that R. Kelly married someone under age – and was flabbergasted when people overlooked this fact at the time to remark that the older singer had married ‘Aaliyah’ rather than flagging her young age.
“Anything under 18 is disgusting. You know what I mean? She was a child,” he says.
R. Kelly has denied he had relations with underage women.
The disgraced star is currently being accused of a string of lurid crimes including sexual assault, domestic violence, and sexual misconduct with underage women.
Aaliyah was killed in an aeroplane crash in 2001 while travelling from the Bahamas following the completion of filming a music video.
