Will The Crown actually portray Meghan Markle and Prince Harry drama?

The Crown has portrayed many milestone events in the history of the House of Windsor, but how close to recent events will it get?

In the wake of the surprise announcement from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex that they would be stepping down as senior members of the royal family , many have taken to social media in anticipation of the current dramas being portrayed on the prestige Netflix drama.

However, will we actually get to see the trials and tribulations involving Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on-screen?

“To be honest, whatever the life of The Crown is after where we are now, I doubt we’ll ever go as far into the present day,” executive producer Suzanne Mackie told PA.

She went on to reiterate: “I think we’ll probably – we won’t travel into the present day.”

However, there was the hint that the much-discussed interview that Prince Andrew had with Newsnight regarding the Jeffrey Epstein scandal did pique the interest of the creative team behind the hit show.

“That was a particularly low point and it resonated for us in many ways but in terms of the huge public exposure of it, not great,” admitted Mackie.

The Crown creator Peter Morgan previously told Entertainment Weekly that the show likely wouldn’t feature a look at Meghan Markle.

Meghan and Harry ‘step back’ from royal life

“I know how my show is going to end — but that’s long before where we are now,” Morgan said in December 2018 during production on season 3.

“I feel uncomfortable writing about events within a certain time period. I think there’s a certain amount of time within which, if you write about it, what you do instantly becomes journalistic. Because it’s too close to the moment.”

He continued: “If you wait a certain amount of time, if you allow fifteen or twenty years, basically a generation, between you and [the events] then you can write about it somewhat freely as drama.

“Let’s wait twenty years and see what there is to say about Meghan Markle. I don’t know what there is to say about Meghan Markle at the moment. I wouldn’t know and I wouldn’t presume. She’ll only become interesting once we’ve had twenty years to digest who she is and what her impact has been.

“If I were to write about Meghan Markle I would automatically be writing journalistically. I’ve got nothing to say about Meghan Markle.”

In light of recent events, perhaps that has changed.

The fourth season of The Crown is due to be released later this year and focus on the marriage of Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer and also the tenure of controversial prime minister Margaret Thatcher.

The Crown seasons 1 to 3 are available now on Netflix.
